Are American Women Trading Beauty For Comfort?

Written by Michael Thervil

According to a report by CNN, it appears that many women in the United States are turning in their high heels in favor of what is known as “flats” and other forms of footwear without heels. The question we are exploring today is why? According to an article written by Orla Pentelow for CNN entitled “have we said goodbye to high heels?”, stated that this shift away from high heels could be because there is a “seismic shift in priorities induced by a new way of living. The siren song of comfort and practicality drowned out high heels allure.”

Now it's easy to understand that that could be one of the possibilities as to why many women in the United States are shifting away from high heels due to being on lockdown from COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is our position that the premise of COVID -19 leading to women wearing high heels has little to do with that. Our position is simple. Many women across the United States have simply gotten mostly complacent and some outright lazy when it comes to wearing high heels because of the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Think about it, the COVID-19 lockdowns ended roughly 2 years ago. So, 24 months is long enough for people to sort of get back into the swing of things when it comes to clothing and attire. Believe it or not, men of all types and socioeconomic brackets love to see women in high heels. That’s because it marks a sign of femininity and beauty. Keep in mind that biology will dictate psychology. However, in this case, it can be safely said that many women in the United States have become either complacent or lazy when it comes to wearing high heels because women typically don’t wear high heels in the house unless they're attempting to look sexy in lingerie or something of the like.

During the author's interview with cognitive psychologist and fashion business consultant Carolyn Mair stated:

“As a result of the pandemic, many of us prioritized wellbeing, comfort and practicality”.

Could it be that because of the COVID-19 lockdowns – people were forced to adapt to the changes imposed on them and thus when it came to women not having a reason to wear high heels it only made sense not to do so? Again, think about the true root cause and let’s not make excuses here.

Another thing that we would like to point out is that the author of the article quoted stated cognitive psychologist Carolyn Mair saying:

“As society moves towards being more egalitarian ideals, there is a rejection of rigidly defined femininity that associated high heels with primary markers of femininity.”

"This shift encourages us to embrace individuality, a broader range of expectations, and reject footwear that may limit mobility and comfort.”

It should be noted that when quality men see a woman in flats, he doesn’t see a woman that puts effort into her appearance. Therefore, she can be considered as a woman that fails to literally put her best foot forward before she makes a public appearance. Hence, if she fails to put her best foot forward, then how can she as a woman enhance him as a man. Remember, the woman that a man chooses to be with for marriage or any serious engagement could make or break the man. So, it would be wise for a woman to put her best foot forward in the best pair of high heels that she can afford so that she can attract the best quality man that she can find.

Rejecting the social markers of femininity does nothing but further blur the lines of what defines women from men. When and if we allow that to occur, we would be inviting even more chaos than we already have in our society. That’s an outcome that we shouldn’t take lightly. Listen, sometimes beauty is pain. And by ridding people of that pain in this case it can be said that we are robbing people of the ability to endure hard times and thus conditioning people to quit when things and time get tough; thus, retarding their ability for both personal social growth and development.

The saying goes: “nothing that’s worth having comes easy” – and the standard of beauty is no exception to that rule. For those that endure the hardships of being truly beautiful they must reap the rewards of their dedication, discipline, and consistency for it they can’t then what would be the reward for one truly being beautiful?

Now that’s Food for thought.
