Are Americans Awkward About Sex? The French Think So

Watching a BBC (British Broadcasting Company) not a Big Black C**k reel entitled: “Are American Awkward About Sex?”, we have to admit that the curator(s) were correct in their assessment. The fact that they brought up the underlining reason as to why we Americans perceive sex in the way we do lets us know that the world is watching and taking notes. Some would wonder if it's for the better or the worst. Either way the hard truth remains that yes, we as Americans are awkward about sex.

Even though we can turn on the television and see countless implied sexual acts, it may seem like we’re not. But that's just the thing, the sexual acts on television and the movies are implied. They really don't “show anything” and these implied sexual acts and encounters gives Americans a false sense of what sex really looks like and what it’s actually all about.

The curator(s) of this BBC video also pointed out that Americans actually really do have a hard time talking about sex not simply between two consenting adults but within our homes and especially when it comes to educating our children. In my younger years I spent two whole weeks in Paris France (I did not want to leave France by the way), and it was the first time I could walk down the street see ads and even magazines and billboards that displayed what we would call in America “adult material”.

That's right, breast (and nipples), vaginas, penises and sexual innuendos were casually shown to the public to market and sell items of various kinds without the typical social backlash that tends to occur here in the states. I saw a lot of it when I went to virgin records as some of the marketing schemes at the time were absolutely fantastic to look at. For the people of France and pretty much the rest of the world the open display of the human body is nothing to be ashamed of as its literally seen as “business as usual”.

However, is it because of the puritans of the past that we are the way we are in America today? Many may say yes to that question. But there is another side of the coin that I think we are failing to consider. And that is that America is relatively secluded from the majority of the world and thus isolated from the openness of not only other countries but other cultures. Think about it. We really only have two big neighbors Canada; Mexico and some Caribbean Islands people go to when they want to take a vacation for a few days to a week. And even then, those countries have very similar “public decency laws” on the books.

Take some time out and not only reflect on your personal sexual values and degree of openness but on the sexual values and openness of other countries.
