There are a lot of contributing factors that led to the death of Evan Griffin Lee while he was in the custody of the Harris County Sheriff Department located in Houston Texas. The failure to maintain care of not only Evan Griffin Lee along with roughly 28 other Inmates that have died within the Harris County Jail that year is a travesty of epic proportions. Many people can agree that it’s one thing to be arrested for whatever reason but it’s another to die due to being beaten to death while in the custody and care of any law-enforcement agency.
It’s been well over one year since Evan Griffin Lee has been killed while in the custody and care of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department and his family still hasn’t been able to receive an official autopsy. Now, nationally known Civil Rights, Personal Injury, and Trial Attorney Ben Crump has taken up the case. At a rally that was held on Saturday may, 27 at the Landmark Community Center in Missouri City Texas near Sugarland Ben Crumb delivered a powerful speech that promised that justice for Evan Griffin Lee would be delivered to his family.
Currently the Harris County Sheriff’s Jail has a myriad of deplorable conditions that not only places the occupants of the building in danger but again has resulted in 28 deaths in 2022 but another 5 deaths as of May 2023 – that’s a rate of 1 Inmate a month this year to date. Moreover, the situation at the Harris County Jail has gotten so bad that the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) has gotten involved. With over 10,000 Inmates and just over 2,500 Deputies it’s very easy to see why the lack of staffing and proper oversight more than likely has played a pivotal role in the death of not only Evan Griffin Lee but other Inmates at the Harris County Jail.
The underlying message that many people who understand the gravity of this situation was this: if law-enforcement can’t provide the proper care and implement the proper controls of its Inmate population then they should stop arresting people. It’s that simple. Remember, when someone gets arrested for whatever reason, they are stripped of their ability to care for themselves – thus the arresting agency must by law provide the required essentials that the subject needs while in their care. Harris County Jail has repeatedly failed to meet and fulfill their obligation not only to the Inmates within their care and control but to the public.
It is very unfortunate and unfair that Evan Griffin Lee and Inmates like him become unnecessary casualties while in the hands of law enforcement – with no end to the social degradation and disregard of life in sight. It is no wonder why Attorney Ben Crump and others are seeking to rectify and hold those responsible for the deaths and injuries of Inmates like Evan Griffin Lee to the highest degree possible under the guise of the law. And as a collective force for the good and betterment of not only the Inmates at Harris County Jail, but for the general public at large they should.
