Beating American Sanctions – Huawei

Written by Michael Thervil

Chinese tech company Huawei

It was once said on the international stage that if you want to lose creditability in geopolitics – weaponized your ability to sanction other countries. This looks like the case when it comes to American and Chinese relations. Earlier this year, American President Joe Biden applied even more sanctions on the Chinese tech company Huawei. The sweeping sanctions were introduced when America cited National Security Concerns. Many are asking the question: “was it really National Security concerns that America had or were these sanctions applied on Huawei or was it for other reasons than stated?”.

While to date, there is no evidence that Huawei has engaged in any type of breaching of American National Security – the sanctions were still applied never-the-less. The truth is, the reason why American sanctioned the Chinese tech company that currently holds over $140 billion in global assets and is whose annual revenue is over $50.49 billion, is because America is still engaging in the Cold War Mentality. The fact of the matter is, America did not want Huawei or China for that matter to become a world leader in the manufacturing of microchips, semiconductors or expand its military applications or its ability to engage in surveillance. For if China did, it would shift the boundaries of being seen as not only as the biggest tech giant in the world, but this would lead to Taiwan being minimized. Furthermore, it would further strengthen China making them an even fiercer competitor against America and the Collective West on the world stage.

The sanctions imposed by President Joe Biden economically crippled Huawei, almost to the point of not being able to recover. But right when America thought it had Huawei right where they wanted them – Huawei made a very strong comeback. This astonishing techno-economic comeback is centered around Huawei’s construction of their new microchip and semiconductor technology which is currently being used to power their cellphones. At the current moment, America appears to be very frustrated and angry with the new breakthrough technology presented by Huawei without the help of America or any other country for that matter.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC)

In fact, America is so frustrated and angry, it’s gotten to the point that they are seeking to launch an “investigation” to see if Huawei has either got a hold of or has in some way utilized American technology to create and manufacture the microchip/semi-conductor in question. But according to recent reports the sanctioned and blacklisted Chinese company “Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation” (SMIC) had a very big hand in helping to bring the Chinese technology to market. The name of the tech in question is the 5g Kirin 9000s microchip/semiconductor which is what is used to power Huawei’s new “Mate 60 Phone” which happens to be on par in terms of power and functionality with Apples newest iPhone.

Another thing that America is appearing to worry about is if Huawei can mass produce this technology to a much larger scale. It’s been speculated by many American news outlets and political pundits that Huawei doesn’t possess the necessary technology or hardware to scale to a large market currently. But we at VEDA Magazine are betting that they either can or will if they haven’t done it already. This is because the one thing that we know about China is that as a country they’re a very resourceful, adaptive and a resilient people. In addition to that, they don’t have the unnecessary bureaucracy, pork belly politics, and red tape that America has which always tends to stop the progression of new products, goods, and services.

The old saying of “the weaponization of sanctions will get you nowhere on the international stage” continues to come to mind. Furthermore, it seems that China in general and Huawei specifically seems to have beaten American sanctions and appears to have the ability to prosper in both the near and distant future.

Again, the weaponization of sanctions will get you nowhere on the international stage.
