Brooke Shields - Staying Relevant in The Age of Me Too

Most people ages 39 and under don't even really know who Brooke Shields is, and if they do then they've most likely heard her name in passing. This is not a bad thing. However, one should keep in mind that Brooke Shields s is no doubt an American Icon in her own right. The question now is why would a woman who is almost 60 years old try to come out now and attempt to obtain sympathy from a younger general public that barely knows her name? Yeah sure, fully grown adults know who she is but honestly, she's largely forgotten when it comes to up-and-coming generations of Americans.

So now it looks as if we have another celebrity of diminished status attempting to capitalize on the “victim of sexualization” bandwagon. Now understand something, and please do not get me wrong. Not only was Brooke Shields absolutely gorgeous as a teen and during her adult prime but she was a child prodigy when it came to acting. There’s simply no denying that. I had the liberty to watch one of her most famous films ever “the blue lagoon” and even in the year of 2023 I can see how and why this film was one of the greatest films that was ever made in the 1980’s.

However, beyond her golden performance on the big screen, I would have to say that she just might be unfounded in her claims of being sexualized as child and teen. Many people may be appalled by my position and that's ok. But the fact still remains that she is an actress. Anything that has happened on screen was simply acting. No more - no less. Now if she remembers feeling uncomfortable during those times in the roles that she played it's understandable - but that is a personal matter as she was extremely young at the time. But at the same time, acting is acting - and it's safe to say that at her age it would’ve been impossible for her to reach the necessary level of maturity to distinguish the business of acting from her personal life and feelings.

The only issue that many people see, and many won't admit to, is that she was just so talented and good-looking that less than 5% of the world's population may have had the talent and beauty she possessed to play the parts she played on film. So, since she played those kinds of roles on the big screen, it was only natural for talent agencies to want her to continue playing the roles she was famous for in the first place in order to sell the products she endorsed because the market associated her with the roles she played in movies. In order to illustrate my point, some people play roles so well that they cannot escape the role in which they played to get them that notoriety that they have; and it doesn’t matter what roles in Hollywood they play after their defining role - the public will always see them in/as their defining role.

I think that Brooke Shields should’ve just said: “Hey, I had a hard time escaping my defining role and it was too much for me to handle back then and I still struggle with it now” instead of blaming nameless people in Hollywood. Rising the BS flag on her issue of being sexually objectified, why did she go topless for Jordache Jeans in the spring of 2022? I happen to like Jordache Jeans because I grew up with the brand, but I don't know anyone that remotely owns or has even seen a pair of Jordache Jeans today.

Lastly, if the people behind the scenes in Hollywood sexually objectified her as she claimed so badly, how come she hasn't named any names? I'm sure the me-too movement would love to back her. Ms. Shields, we love your work, the world thinks your sexy but this child sexualization thing your pushing is a farce. If you ask the people that are willing to admit it - if we want to sexualize children all we need to do is go to Instagram as they sexualize themselves for free with no movie deal in sight.
