There are so many things about China that people love all over the world from a cultural, education, spiritual and entertainment perspective. But the one thing that people don't either know or talk about enough is the declining birth rate that China is experiencing. There are at least two factors that one can identify that play a big part in this social issue. The first being the normalization of China's One Child Policy that was started in the 1980’s, which had issues associated with it. Also, what is overlooked is the fact that people no matter where they are in the world, no matter the ethnicity were never supposed to live in the extremely large densely populated cities that can be found not only in China but around the world.
Before what we have right now, people used to live in small groups between 100-150 people per group; and when that group got too big then some people would break off and establish themselves elsewhere. But when I as a social scientist look at how densely packed the people are in these cities, especially in the urban areas of China, I can easily understand why China is facing the population decline that they are experiencing right now.
The good news is that the Chinese Government is looking to and are currently providing a solution to that social issue and the answer is assisted reproductive technology or (ART)/IVF (invitro fertilization). Is it a good idea? Most people think that it is. However, there are two things that may become problematic and that is the occurrence of a woman having twins, triplets, and quadruplets. It's not that unheard of for those occurrences to manifest after utilizing IVF treatments.
With that comes the economic impacts on the family in which the unplanned birth of two or more babies will undoubtable have. This is really something to think about. The second issue that comes to my mind is more of a question than anything else and that is: are the men of China not really that interested in having sex with the women of China or could it be something else?
Could it be the ratio of men to women in China? This is something to explore because for a very long time and I'm talking decades baby boys where more preferred than the baby girls and possibly as a result of that maybe there's not enough women to go around. Maybe? There are only slightly more men than women even with the Chinese Public engaging in the selective birth practice of the pass. Maybe it could be the social trend of older women preferring younger men that could be the blame - who really knows.
The one thing that's constant is that China is facing an issue with low birth rates; and the good thing is that I think that China can fix it.
