Just before the weekend we had the opportunity to sit down with Fatima Friday and speak not only about the Houston Independent School District (HISD) but the state of education in America as a whole. Educator Fatima Friday spoke about her childhood and what inspired her to want to become an Educator as an adult. This brilliant and insightful conversation on the state of education in both Houston Texas and America as a whole, provoked us to discuss education in not just a linear fashion but from a perspective to understand education in both Houston Texas and America from a holistic point of view as well.
During our interview, don’t be caught off guard if you find yourself asking the same question that many parents of students within Houston HISD and other schools across America ask and that is: “what exactly is happening to our educational system?”. For many people and parents, the educational system of today reflects nothing of what it once was in the past. And although many school administrators, teachers, faculty, and staff are calling for its reform, it seems to just as many people and parents that there is some kind of force at work that is seeking to keep it in the dire straits that it’s currently in today. Is there some kind of mass conspiracy to keep the students of both Houston Texas and America deficient in their learning?
Or is the state of education of both Houston and America in general a result of willful neglect and economic starvation? Could it be that education in both Houston Texas and America be simply the product of the ever breaking down of the communities that surround the schools and family structure? Who knows as there seems to be more questions than answers. But we at VEDA Magazine advise you not to fret because this interview with Fatima Friday is one that should help enlighten you on what’s going on regarding how Educators see things as well as the current state of education not only in Houston Texas but across the nation.
