Final Houston Mayoral Runoff Debate: Sheila Jackson-Lee vs. John Whitmire

Written by Michael Thervil

After covering the Houston Mayoral runoff last night between Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and Senator John Whitmire there are several takes away that we would like to present you with. The first thing that when it comes to who gets the awards for having the biggest begging bowl in Houston, that award goes to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and the most poised award goes to Senator John Whitmire.

The reason we are saying this is because instead of insuring that the people of Houston become socio-economically secure through self-sufficiency, the idea of running to the federal government and begging for a multitude of handouts when big daddy government, can barely pay his own bills is outright ridiculous – especially in a state like Texas who entertained the idea of succeeding from the U.S. Federal Government. By Sheila Jackson-Lee engaging in this kind of behavior, it not only demonstrates that she can single handedly raise the national debt; but it shows that she either is ignorant of the strings attached that comes with governmental funding or she is simply in the business of obtaining a “Federal Black Card”, in which she has no way to pay the bill on. Keep in mind that “there is no such thing as a free lunch”.

When it comes to Senator John Whitmire, even though he was poised and in maintained a great sense of control with dealing with Congresswoman Sheila-Jackson-Lee's low blows and tactfully checking an unintelligible detractor from the crowd; it boils down to the obvious with Senator John Whitmire. It’s not that he doesn’t have the money or the strategic partnerships to set Houstonians on the right socio-economic trajectory, it’s just that like Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-lee, it seems that he may not have a concrete plan other than the previous talking points that any other politician has; whether their Democrat or Republican; when it comes to crime, policing, pollution, education, and employment. This is not to say that he is a bad candidate for the mayor of Houston, but we are definitely taking the position that his solutions to tackle the social issues of crime, policing, pollution, education, and employment in Houston could be better articulated and/or more defined.

Last night’s Houston final runoff debate between Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee and Senator John Whitmire may not have been a complete shit show – but it was a debate in which neither one of the mayoral candidates placed their best foot forward. But don’t take out word for it, see for yourself as we covered the debate in its entirety.
