Located in a great location
After providing coverage for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s official announcement of her running to become the next Mayor of Houston Texas, my colleague and I decided to get a get something to eat. While riding shotgun my colleague Googled “Bar-B-Q nearby” and Google Maps led us to a neighborhood just outside of Downtown Houston to a quaint restaurant by the name of Henderson & Kane General Store. The exterior of the building had a very attractive antique look and was very reminiscent of the “good old days” when everyone knew each other, and strangers were always greeted upon eye contact.
Warm and inviting.
When we stepped in, we noticed that the restaurant felt exactly like a general store rather than an actual restaurant – it just “felt right”. It was very clean and chic, but it still had that “old timey feeling” that really made you feel welcomed. There were various types of candy for sale, wine, homemade margaritas in mason like jars, there were improvised tables that were very large and made from varnished cable wrapping spools that really captured your attention. As we walked about halfway into the general store, we were excitedly greeted by one of the employees. Upon getting menus, we also noticed that they had homemade desserts neatly packed in an old-fashioned food cooler (yes, they had homemade banana pudding).
Cozy and intimate
All of this nostalgia of the past was overwhelming in a good way as it made you feel grateful for how much this world has changed but at the same time made you feel like you somehow wanted to remain in the grip of simpler times. As far as we can tell, all of their meats were prepared on location, smoked to perfection and served fresh. As an added bonus they make their varieties of sausages in house. We ordered and within minutes we had a great meal presented to us. The meats were properly smoked, and their Bar-B-Q sauces were extremely tasty.
