Mayor Turner Addressing Illegal Dumping In Houston

Was the comment of Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont during his visit to the City of Houston on April 6, 2023 correct when he called the City of Houston “Butt Ugly”? Of course, he had to be talking about the issue of illegal dumping we assume. Maybe – maybe not. However, today was the day that Mayor Turner of Houston Texas, held a Press Conference concerning the issue of illegal dumping on the streets of Houston. The mayor addressing this problem was a long time coming” stated one of the attendees.

Now granted, the issue of illegal dumping doesn’t plague every neighborhood in the City of Houston although this systemic problem can be found nearly everywhere. But illegal dumping can mostly be found primarily in the lower socioeconomic neighborhoods that are adversely impacted by drugs, crime and various other types of vice. Also joining the City of Houston in “cleaning up its act” when it comes to illegal dumping is the Federal Government.

Press Conference on Illegal Dumping

Outside of the Press Conference, city officials unveiled their plan to tackle this issue and the name of the program is called “One Clean Houston”. The goal of the project is massive considering that this plan is being implemented throughout the City of Houston which stretches over 600 miles. The “One Clean Houston” initiative is focused on three main areas of concern which are:

· “Rapid Clean-Up”

· “Better Enforcement”

· “Prevention & Education”

One of the main hurdles of the program is that the dump sites that are available for the citizens of Houston to utilize require some form of official governmental identification (driver’s license, state identification card or some other form of government issued ID). However, due to the fact that Houston has a sizable illegal immigrant population, many people shy away from going to the dump sites for fear of being caught as an illegal alien.

The One Clean Houston program is of course partnered with Waste Management and is seeking to “attract & retain solid waste drivers” so that they can efficiently speed up the waste collection process. Moreover, the City of Houston is pushing for better resolve from its law enforcement personnel to actively seek out cases of illegal dumping and swiftly punish those that are perpetrators of this crime. Furthermore, Mayor Turner and his administration are putting in place prevention and educational resources for people so that the citizens of Houston know how much waste can they dispose of and the location of the dumpsites so that those citizens (and illegal aliens) that don’t know where to discard of their waste know where it is supposed to go.

Now bear in mind that when we say solid waste, we are not simply talking about trash bags that are being illegally dumped into the city; we are talking about furniture, television sets, electronics, lawn and garden tools, and any other items that are too large for normal garbage trucks to collect. So, if you live in the City of Houston and you need solid waste collection do not hesitate to call 311 so that you can get the information that you need to properly discard your waste.
