Ray Gregson: Professional Umpire

Written by Michael Thervil

Professional Umpire Ray Gregson

It's not every day that people get the opportunity to speak with officials of sports teams such as baseball Umpires. But today is the day that we at VEDA Magazine had the opportunity to do so. The Professional Umpire that we had the privilege to speak with today was Ray Gregson as he provided insight and his expertise for the following collegiate conferences SEC, Sunbelt, and the NCAA.

When many people see Umpires, they don't consider all the time they have to invest into their designated sport of interest. From their initial spark of interest, to going to Umpire School in this case, to the actual specific amount hours that they must accumulate as a budding Umpire judging the sport that they’re presiding over; it’s a lot that they have to go through in order to fully qualify as an Umpire to preside of sports such as the MLB.

Today while providing coverage at Minute Maid Park, home of the MLB World Champion Houston Astros, we had the opportunity to speak with one of the Umpires of the 9 games over the three-day MLB/Astros special event entitled “The Astros foundation College Classic”. Keep in mind that this was a short unplanned interview because we had to get back down onto the field and continue our coverage as promised.

It was an absolute pleasure and an honor to speak with Ray Gregson as he is super professional and exceptionally knowable in his craft as a Professional Umpire. Take some time out to listen to this short interview with an Umpire from the great State of Louisiana. And as always, enjoy, and thank you for reading VEDA Magazine. Special thanks to Ray Gregson for this exclusive VEDA Magazine interview.
