Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit

Written by Michael Thervil

Shanghai Cooperation Organization Meeting starts at Timestamp 6:14:01

July 3, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with world leaders such as Türkiye President Tayyip Erodogan, Pakistani President Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and of course the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the Kazakhstan capital of Astana to discuss ways to improve international trade relations regarding agriculture, energy, and economic solidarity between the countries. Outside of strengthening their nations ties, the countries in attendance for this year’s SCO summit will discuss ways that they could economically strengthen their economies through trade.

This meeting comes one day before the actual summit is to take place between the nine countries that are set to attend. The nine countries that are set to be in attendance for the exception of India because India’s newly reelected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will not be in attendance for this summit, however the External Affairs Minister of India Minister S. Jaishankar will be standing in for Prime Minister Modi. The reason for this is because it's currently speculated that Prime Minister Modi didn’t attend because of China failing to recall their soldiers after several previous talks since deploying them on the border India/China. The ten nations that will comprise this year’s SCO summit will be Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, China, India, with the tenth nation being Belarus. It is predicted that the SCO will expand in the future as countries around the world are looking to shift away from America and the Collective West.

In holding these high-level geopolitical talks, the countries in attendance are seeking to strategically work together so that both their strategic partnerships and their respective economies can “serve as a counterweight” to America and the Collective West’s hegemony. Keep in mind that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is not about Russian President Vladimir Putin solely meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which was the highlight of the first day. Instead, the SCO is a cumulation of ten countries that are engaging in talks so they can discuss and create solutions to topics and issues of vital interest to their respective nations.

China President Xi Jinping and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the first day of the official start of the summit to foster a friendly mutual understanding regarding trade between Russia and China. The reported theme for this year’s SCO summit is "Strengthening Multilateral Dialogue - Striving for Sustainable Peace and Development". This year’s SCO resulted in all nation members signing a declaration to “combat crime, the banning of arms to space and biological weapons”. This says a lot about not only how far the world has come geopolitically, but it also says a lot about how fast the world is changing from a unipolar to a multi-polar world.
