SILENT PANDEMIC: GUNS IN AMERICA

In a country like America, where school shootings have become an occurrence not only to plan for, but has become normalized, it seems as if there is very little to be done to curb or stop the pandemic of gun violence within American society. Many people in America are looking for someone or some company to blame. But in American society, the politicians who draft and make laws possible and weapon manufacturers are immune from both prosecution and the creation of a product that endangers American lives. But it seems as if the American people haven’t reached the tipping point where they’ve had enough.

We at VEDA Communications can make this claim because if the American people wanted to really do something about the pandemic of gun violence in America, then they would have done something about it already. Therefore, the question of how many more Americans are going to have to die before any real actions are taken to prevent acts of gun violence on American streets and in American schools is nothing more than a rhetorical question at best. There is a significant population of people in America who cherish the 2nd Amendment which gives them the legal right to possess firearms and if you ask many of them the reason why they carry a firearm falls under three reasons, for self-defense, hunting, and just in case the government becomes “tyrannical”.

Honestly, most Americans don’t really get into situations which would validate them having to carry a gun for self-defense in the first place. Moreover, most Americans aren’t hunters. In fact, most Americans will never utilize a firearm to engage in any kind of political violence. So, why do so many American own or seek to own firearms for reasons stated here that they will most likely never use them for? This is one of the most important questions that should be answered. Another question that should be examined is why so many gun manufacturers in America are allowed to lobby against gun control measures that would keep the American’s safe from any intended or unintended acts of gun violence.

Another question Americans need to ask themselves is where does the unwarranted phobia of their government coming to take their guns away come from? Considering that the American government hasn’t attempted to take away the firearms of any of it’s people in mass? This is something to think about as there is a growing population of people, especially younger Americans who are calling for the complete ban of private firearm ownership. In a study that was conducted in 2022, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported:

“There were more than 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the United States according to mortality data. That's about 132 people dying from a firearm-related injury each day. More than half of firearm-related deaths were suicides and more than four out of every 10 were firearm homicides.”

Maybe it is time that gun laws in America be changed to fit the current times we live in. Maybe the 2nd Amendment should get “amended”, given the pandemic of gun violence that is adversely affecting all Americans. Maybe the 2nd Amendment should be canceled. Remember that the 2nd Amendment isn’t not a law, but an Amendment that can be amended.
