Too Old For Politics?

Written by Michael Thervil

American President Joe Biden

Many Americans around the country are asking the same question: “are these politician’s too old to be in politics?”. This is not a new conversation. For decades in America there has been reporting of politicians no matter their political affiliations suffering from heart attacks while on the Senate floor, and even showing early signs of dementia while serving in office. Even more than that, in recent months the American people have been questioning both the mental and physical health of American President Joe Biden. From president Biden falling off his bike to haphazardly falling on stage to showing subtle signs of difficulty walking in general – people all around the country are questioning if he and others like him are too old to be the President of the United States.

Then there’s the story of Republican Mitch Mcconnell; who has appeared to “freeze” as if he was suffering from some sort of catatonic episode or at the very least displayed some sort of neurological issues while attempting to address the questions of the Press. In short, people across America are showing signs of concern. With all the examples mentioned, the next question is: should there be age limits for American politician’s while serving in office? Some people say yes; and others will point out the fact that if America decided to place age restrictions on public offices, it would become a slippery slope of an argument that would allow for legal practice of “agism” to be applied for the common man in the workforce.

Both sides have logical points but, no matter what side of the coin you subscribe to, there’s one thing that is clear – something must be done. Agism or not, there is something that is called “fit for duty”. And it is our position here at VEDA Magazine that all politician’s should adhere to some type of universal battery of test to determine if their fit for duty. However, there are some special interest groups out there that will fight and lobby against this. Why? Because it goes against their self-interest.

It is a well-known fact on Capitol Hill, it’s easier to get a Bill passed through an older politician than a younger one. So, it would be even more advantageous for special interest groups to help an older politician keep their elected seat because that politician becomes less of a politician and more of an empty suit that can be used to pass legislation through which benefits them in the end. For many people this sounds like some sort of conspiracy theory. However, if you look around you would be able to empirically see who and how the same politicians continue to get elected despite the American people not really liking or wanting to vote for which politicians stand before them.

We at VEDA Magazine would like for you to take time out to make up your own mind as to why these politicians are allowed to govern the American people even though they may not be either healthy enough to do so or are too cognitively declined to make the best decisions for the future of the American public.
