TSU Women’s Basketball – For The Love Of The Game

Written by Michael Thervil

Texas Southern University Head Coach Vernette Skeete

It can be said that women’s basketball doesn’t get enough coverage and it doesn’t get enough publicity. Now we all know that coverage of any sport (and just about anything media wise) is based upon two things: viewership and advertising. But what about covering a game just for the love of the game? In spirit of that, we are bringing you the Texas Southern University Women’s Basketball Team. These ladies work and play hard when it comes to balling on the court. During the two games we’ve covered thus far, we have seemed both cakewalks and trying times. What we’re saying here is that we’ve seen the joy as well as the tears.

Power Forward/Center Turner

One of our favorite players on the court is Turner (#20 - Junior) who scored 10 points in their last game against California Baptist University and has an average so far this season of 8.9 points per game. The reason why she was one of our favorite players this past game was because she was just damn good on the court. This is not to take away from the other players on the team as they are just as good, but it was just a delight watching her play this last game against CBU (California Baptist University). Currently she’s leading her team when it comes to free-throws.

From our perspective, this is great as her being a Power Forward/Center she’s more likely to be fouled while rebounding and putting up shots from inside the paint, thus it forwards her the opportunity to go to the line for a free throw. Another reason why she was our favorite player from this game was because it was exciting to watch her aggressively grab rebounds and ensure that her teammates either maintain control of the ball and/or obtain the opportunity to score. Either way, it increases the odds of her team controlling the momentum of the game.

When it comes to the TSU Women’s Basketball Team in general, we liked that they display a great deal of cohesion between each other on the court. Moreover, we took notice of their Head Coach, Vernette Skeete Who is currently serving as the 13th Head Coach of the TSU Women’s Basketball Team. Coach Skeete is one that comes not only stylishly dressed on the court, but she shows her passion for both the game and coaching in general through her facial expressions and articulation of game play strategies to her team.

Granted VEDA Magazine covers more geopolitical events than sports by a long shot, but we have to say that it's kind of cool to relax a bit and enjoy watching a game of basketball – no matter who’s playing; and in this case it’s the TSU Women’s Basketball Team. Keep up the good work ladies and remember win, lose, or draw; it’s the love of the sport that counts the most.
