A nurse in the United Kingdom was recently charged with killing 7 newborn babies before police hampered her plot to kill at least another 6 other newborns under her care. The nurse’s name was Lucy Letby. This 33-year-old nurse recently killed 7 babies by either overfeeding them, injecting air into their stomachs and blood, dislodging their breathing tubes, overdosing them with insulin and at times outright physically assaulting them. Many people can agree that we are living in crazy times – but the question that we are asking is what put her and other people in a position of public trust to commit such atrocities?
It was also reported that Lucy Letby assaulted 13 other babies prior to the killing of these 7 newborns at the neonatal ward at Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015-2016. Even more than that, reports say she was arrested twice again in connection to the same kind of alleged crimes back in 2018-2019, with another arrest revolving around the same thing in 2020. Here it is 2023 and the question that is most puzzling is why wasn’t she stripped of her nursing license between the years 2015-2016?
More often than not, the world would never know a person’s motive for committing such heinous acts of violence – especially towards people who do not have the ability to defend themselves. But one thing is clear – she has now been caught and is now in police custody. But the one thing that we do know is that former nurse Lucy Letby was caught not because of allegations or arrest record in connection to these types of deviant acts, but she was arrested and charged because during a search of her home, police found detailed notes of her confessing to the crimes she had committed in connection to the allegations she faced.
In one of her handwritten notes, she stated the following:
“I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them.” In her notes she went on to say: “I am a horrible evil person.” Then written in all caps: “I am evil I did this.”
It was also reported that she wrote down the initials of her victims along with the dates of their deaths in her personal diary.
During the police investigation they discovered that doctors did voice their concern about the rising number of infant deaths at the hospital, but their claims were dismissed by the hospital management. In 2016, there were two sets of triplets that ended up dead while under her care. Due to doctors’ suspicions, she was reassigned from the neonatal ward to another section of the hospital. When that happened, she filed a grievance against the hospital. That grievance resulted in her being placed on clerical duties. The suspicions of the doctors were overturned, and the doctors were ordered to formally write apologetic letters to her.
It wouldn’t be until 2017 that the police became involved in this investigation. For many the big question is: for her to finally be in police custody and placed on trial to face the British criminal justice system in 2023, why did it take this long after the assaults and deaths of over 13 children? The world may never know.
